Grasping

Grasping. Strength, precision and speed: the human hand

As the human thumb evolved it became stronger and also capable of opposing the fingers. This allowed the hand to grasp objects, making it more flexible and expanding the ways that it could be used.

When humans began to walk upright, the hands no longer had to help support the weight of the body. This allowed them to evolve into highly-sensitive organs of touch.

Pianists provide a perfect example of how the precision and speed of our hands can be trained.

What makes our hands so special?
